On Being Content (Pt. 2)

Hey guys! Hope the past week went really great for you, and if it did not, for whatever reason, please be encouraged. It will only get better. Perhaps you feel like the week did not go as planned or some goals that you fought hard to accomplish didn’t happen? Don’t give up, just keep fighting, keep trying and stay positive. It will be alright in the end…

Last weekend I shared some lessons I’m currently learning on being content and happy in whatever situation one finds his/herself presently. If you missed it, you can read it here. I touched on just learning to be content with who you are as a person and resisting the temptation to want to compare yourself with someone else or their looks or “amazing” personality traits…

“So, remember that you’re special, you’re perfect the way you are, you are beautiful in and out, there are good things about you that are easy to love(and if you’re thinking “oh what things?” perhaps you just need to look a little closer) your personality is one of a kind and there is so much others can learn from you…just from who you are.”

Content with where you are

It is true that our generation just wants more and more and more and more. Most times, we never really take in the beauty of life and the amazing lessons that can be learned in its different phases…well, because we’re too busy trying to insta story and snapchat the moments on our phones. You graduate from school and you can’t wait to get a job, you get a job and you can’t wait for the next better one. We want fast cars, perfect houses, perfect spouses, perfect children…. we want it all.

Sometimes, society may attempt to rob you of the joy and peace you get from just being content with where you find yourself. You could just be on your own, feeling happy and content one minute and then someone goes “wow…you’re still here?” “oh you still work there?” “oh you still sell shoes?” as though the phase you’re in in life is one that needs to be upgraded immediately. You then start feeling bad in your phase of life or trying to do so much to overcompensate. Sometimes we go so far as to post on social media things that are not true about where we are or what we own just to please people that we don’t even know because we are insecure that we may not be where we are supposed to be in life.

“One of the main reasons we struggle with insecurity is that we are comparing our behind the scenes with everybody’s highlight reel”

We only get to see the highlights and social media does not help one bit. We fall in love with the “perfect” lifestyles of people and want what they have. Let’s not even go into what weddings have become now…

Let’s stop for a moment…how do we just stop and be content with where we are in life right now? How do we just take a deep breath, smile and live in the now? How do we just be all there wherever we are? How do we just, in the midst of all the dissatisfaction, complaint, sadness and desire for more and more and more, be content with what we have and where we are? I know for me, some of the things I’ve learned to do when I’m feeling less than content:

Be grateful

I’m learning to first be grateful for what I have; family, job, amazing friendships, peace of mind, a relationship with God….that opportunity that seems small but only you got it? Look back and count your blessings. Remember that some people stare at you in amazement and dream that they could be you…so be grateful.

I love this verse so much because it reminds me to just be content in whatever situation.

Ask yourself why

It’s easy to focus on all the things you do not have and the thing you want badly, but ask yourself, why do I want this thing? Is it to show others I have it or to feel better about yourself now that I have it because others do? Do I want to show

Patient

To be content does not mean that you do not desire more in any aspect of your life. It just means that you are thankful for what you have and you are patient for what is to come.

Appreciate life!

Today, take time out to just breathe ,chill, enjoy and appreciate life! You’re alive! That is enough to be excited about! Call up the people you love, remind them why they are special to you and just be!

Take one step at a time

I’m learning that life is in phases. Fall in love with the phases and learn the lessons you can from it, taking it one step at a time. You will get there..

“One Step at a Time”- Jordin Sparks

Hurry up and wait
So close, but so far away
Everything that you’ve always dreamed of
Close enough for you can taste
But you just can’t touch
You wanna show the world, but no one knows your name yet
You wonder when and where and how you’re gonna make it
You know you can if you get the chance
In your face as the door keeps slamming
Now you’re feeling more and more frustrated
And you’re getting all kind of impatient, waiting

You believe and you doubt
You’re confused and got it all figured out
Everything that you’ve always wished for
Could be yours, should be yours, would be yours
If they only knew

We live and we learn to take
One step at a time
There’s no need to rush
It’s like learning to fly
Or falling in love
It’s gonna happen and it’s
Supposed to happen that we
Find the reasons why
One step at a time

When you can’t wait any longer
But there’s no end in sight
It’s your faith that makes you stronger
The only we get there is one step at a time

One step at a time guys.

Have a great day! x
